#NationalWildfireAwarenessMonth

New Mexico's two wildfires have merged into one large wildfire (having burned 451 square miles so far) and is coming very close to the record for biggest wildfire in the state’s history. With the state feeling the impact of these fires, and May being National Wildfire Awareness Month, Menicucci Insurance Agency feels now is an appropriate time to share some tips and resources on how to be aware and practice preventative measures for wild fire safety.

Wildfire Prevention Tips:

  • Obey local laws regarding open fires, including campfires and fire pits.

  • Keep all flammable objects away from fire. Scrape away leaves, twigs, and grass within a 10-foot diameter circle from fire.

  • Have firefighting tools nearby and never leave a fire unattended.

  • Carefully dispose of hot charcoal and drown all fires until it's cold.

  • Pay close attention to weather and drought conditions, which can affect the flammability of vegetation. Avoid any activities that involve fire or sparks when it’s hot, dry and windy.

  • If you are off-roading, remember that your exhaust can reach temperatures of 1,000+ degrees! So, avoid driving or parking over dry grass.
